A Stanford Study Raises New Concerns

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in classrooms has brought both promise and apprehension. The study examined essays written by Chinese students for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). AI detection tools incorrectly flagged a significant portion as AI-written. The root cause? Factors such as lower text “perplexity” and the frequent use of simpler, common vocabulary. This bias risks penalizing English learners unfairly, even when they submit authentic, original work.

Unearthing Bias in AI Tools

Bias in AI is not new. AI systems are trained on vast datasets, and if those datasets contain human biases, those biases will surface in AI outputs. As Christopher Doss of the RAND Corporation notes, “AI is trained on data. Societal biases are baked into data.”

For educators, this means AI detectors should be used cautiously and never as the sole method to determine academic honesty. Blind trust in these tools could harm students, especially English learners, whose writing styles may differ from those of native speakers.

By tracking how a piece evolves over time, educators can better assess whether AI assistance was involved. This approach reduces reliance on flawed AI detectors and provides deeper insight into a student’s learning process.

Supporting English Learners in the AI Era

In fact, AI has real potential to help—offering personalized grammar feedback, translation support, and language-learning tools. But these benefits will only be realized if we address the underlying biases in AI detection and deployment.
