What Is a Letter of Continued Interest?

A LOCI (Letter of Continued Interest) is a professional communication sent to a college by a waitlisted applicant. Its purpose is to:

  • Express your continued interest in attending the institution.
  • Provide updates on achievements or changes since submitting your application.
  • Reaffirm why the college is the perfect fit for you.

Admissions officers often look favorably on students who demonstrate genuine interest and proactive communication.

When Should You Send a LOCI?

Once you’ve been notified of your waitlist status and the school indicates they accept LOCIs, aim to send your letter within a few weeks. This shows promptness and enthusiasm without appearing overly eager.

What to Include in Your LOCI

Here’s a breakdown of what your letter should cover:

1. Gratitude

Start by thanking the admissions committee for considering your application and placing you on the waitlist. For example:
“Thank you for reviewing my application and offering me a place on the waitlist. I am grateful for the opportunity to remain under consideration for admission.”

2. Reaffirm Interest

In your letter of continued interest, clearly state that the college remains your top choice and explain why it aligns with your academic and career goals. Be specific and personal. For instance:
“After visiting [College Name] and speaking with current students, I’m even more confident that its [specific program] will help me achieve my goal of [career objective].”

3. Provide Updates

Highlight significant accomplishments since you submitted your application. Examples might include:

  • Improved grades or test scores.
  • Awards or honors.
  • Leadership roles or extracurricular achievements.
  • New work, internship, or volunteer experiences.

Avoid repeating information already in your application unless there’s a meaningful update.

4. Reiterate Fit

Explain how you can contribute to the college community. Mention specific clubs, research opportunities, or initiatives that resonate with you.

5. Close Professionally

End with a polite closing that reiterates your appreciation for the committee’s time. Include your full name and contact information.
